There have been strong protests in Stockholm from the Swedish citizens against Turkey related to Sweden's bid to join NATO.

During the protests on Saturday, the protesters committed the act of burning the Quran outside the Turkish embassy in Stockholm. This has led to heightened tensions between the two countries.

Turkey is a country with the majority of the population being muslims. This act has garnered great condemnation from Turkey, labeling the act as "vile" and stating that the government's decision to allow the protest to go on was "completely unacceptable."

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs denounced the act in an issued statement, saying that it still took place despite "repeated warnings."

Turkey had appealed to Sweden to stop the protest earlier and called off a visit by Sweden's Defence Minister, Pal Jonson. The visit was to dispel, Nato member— Turkey's objection against Scandinavian countries joining the Nato military alliance.

Being a member of Nato, Turkey can block another country from joining. Turkey has till now denied application of both Finland and Sweden.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the burning of the Quran was another example of the "alarming" extent to which Islamophobia, racism and discrimination had reached Europe.

They requested that the government take immediate action and necessary measures. ∎
