The Menu – “A culinary story with a dark humorous tone”

NAMITHA PRABHAKAR

Movie: The Menu
Genre: Dark humour, Thriller, Horror
Director: Mark Mylod

The director of the movie is Mark Mylod, a British television and film director and executive producer. The story starts with Tyler and Margot, a young couple who visits an exclusive fine-dining restaurant named Hawthrone. Tyler is an eager wannabe chef and is seen to be in awe of the chef Julian Slowik. The chef is portrayed as a joyless person who condemns everything. There are also a bunch of other people who are present in this “culinary shrine” which is run with cult-like devotion by the fierce front of house manager Elsa. This group consists of braying investment bankers, a desperate movie star, and an unhappy wealthy couple attempting to find some meaning in their lives. Celebrities, food lovers, and food critics are also present to appreciate both the pricey cuisine and the food, not knowing that they are all in for a surprise.

The characters in the movie are as follows. Ralph Fiennes plays the role of well-known chef named Julian Slowik who caters to the elite with his culinary expertise; he purchased a distant island to house his exclusive restaurant, which only the elite could afford. Margot (Anya Taylor-Joy) shows up for the dinner event in Tyler's spot as the foodie's girlfriend. In the movie, Nicholas Hoult plays Tyler, who appears to be very enthusiastic about taking his date to the expensive restaurant. Actress Hong Chau, who plays Elsa, is a member of the team in charge of running the occasion. Janet McTeer plays the role as Lillian who is a food critic who chooses to maintain a positive attitude despite the bizarre events that surround her and the other patrons.

In my opinion the film is very entertaining. It is an incredibly funny black-horror comedy which parodies the culinary culture. I was intrigued by the movie's trailer, and ever since, I have been anticipating its arrival. “The Menu” is a humorous film, with social critique and a standout performance by Ralph Fiennes. The viewers are made to feel a part of the event by the tasteful presentation of each offering and course. You are on the edge of your seat as the plates get stranger and the tension between the diners and the chef grows. Even those who aren't fans will find the comedy to be amusing because it seems smooth and natural. The film has presented a pre-existing idea with a unique twist that makes it seem completely new. The film is currently available on Hotstar, Prime and HBO Max. ∎
