A striking decline in population has been detected in the world's most populated country, China. This is the first time in over 60 years that this has happened.

On Tuesday, the Chinese Government stated that 9.56 million people were born in 2022, whereas 10.41 million people died. The last time the death rate exceeded those of birth was in the early 1960's.

The decline in the 1960's occurred due to great failure of an economic experiment lead by President, Mao Zedong, during the Great Leap Forward. This experiment led to severe famine that resulted in widespread death.

China's birth rate has been declining steadily for years, this is the sixth year of decline in population seen in the country. After seven years of scrapping the one-child policy, China's population now struggles with "negative population growth."

The decline in population does not only affect China but also, its economy. With the Chinese Government announcing a demographic crisis that describes the country with lower labor forces and increased burden on Healthcare and other social security costs. By 2035, one third of the population consisting of 400 million people in China are expected to be older than 60. ∎
